Also, OpenOffice does not touch existing files in any manner. There is no
automatic conversion of files. Also, .rtf is a Microsoft-specified format.
It sounds as if the File Associations (tying files of a given type to
applications) have been disturbed, if you are on Windows.

When you say that Word 'no longer opens' them, do you mean that when
you double-click on them they're opened in OpenOffice? If so, it means
that the file association has been changed. Can you right-click on a
.rtf file and choose to open it with Word?
