Removed CentOS flavour of OpenOffice 2.0.4
Downloaded and Installed 2.2.0
Went to any menu item it paused for ~10 seconds but did not hang.
System was completely normal.

Thanks for your response. Disabling GUI effects (KDE) did not help.
I'm probably going to switch this system from CentOS to Fedora 7.

Very often when I open a document (double click a desktop document) and
then click on the menu the xorg desktop pseudo freezes. The mouse will
be able to move in a subset of the current screen but all events go to
the netherworld.
