It seems silly to me. Still, someone should be pushing them to recognize OOo as
a good alternative to Microsoft Office before they deliberately or
inadvertently turn ECDL into another platform for Microsoft hegemony.

You're excused.
OpenOffice.org is, indeed, a free product. People who package OOo are allowed,
under the terms of the license, to charge a fee. No one here
Even if you got Microsoft Works for free, it would still be too expensive.

Back in 1998, I bought an IBM PC directly from IBM and there was no option to
have OS/2 installed. If it's still a product, they're certainly not pushing it

OOo is licensed for free use for all purposes, commercial and non-commercial.
You do not have to pay for a license, regardless of what you use it for.

Carrie--
Your daughter can use OOo to do her work and, when she is finished, save
it in a Microsoft-supported format. Provided that she does so, her
teachers will be able to read the documents using Microsoft Office.
Simply use the Save As feature and save in Microsoft Word, Excel, or
PowerPoint
If you're using Windows, it should open normally just by double-clicking
on it in Explorer. CHM is a compiled HTML help file.

Like any normal Windows application, OOo will run under terminal

All--
I'm speccing out low-end laptops that I can use for writing and not much
else. I was wondering:
1. What's the cheapest laptop I can buy and run OOo reliably?
2. What's the cheapest laptop I can buy and run OOo under Windows
reliably?
