I believe you have to associate the ODT with Openoffice. Click on the
file in the finder and hit APPLE I that will bring up the info window.
There should be an "open with" section, open that up and select open
office. Also in that section there's a button that says "do this for
all" or similar. That should do it.
(sorry, I'm not on a Mac right now and it may be a little different)

When I create and save a new document in odt format, I am then unable to

open it from my Documents folder on my iMac.  I get a dialog that it is 
not readable, yet I can open it via the recent documents list.  Any
ideas?
