thunderbird/512MB ram, no net access.. installed via USB key), which
previously had 2.4.1 installed. After installation, I run the program,
which, of course, asks me to import the old settings/register, etc (the
-mentioned options. That installed successfully (on another machine).
Thank you for the info on where the user data is stored. That gives me a
few ideas to try.

Well, tonight I copied the 'user' directory from a working machine to the
problem machine, and openoffice came right up without any problem. I
wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the 'quickstart' utility. (I
