The workaround suggested in

did not work for me (Ubuntu Dapper, Edgy & Feisty systems). The only
thing that 'fixed' the problem was to remove (uninstall) jre_1.6.0-fcs.
In the OOo download this is in the jre_6-linux-i586.rpm package - or if
converted to a debian package it is jre_1.6.0-fcs-1_i386.deb.
