A little additional point, Julie

There are two versions of OOo for the Mac, one requiring installation of
X-windows for the display, and another called Neo-office-J, which is
Java based and uses the native Mac display. Many seem to prefer the latter.

I am not a Mac user myself, but there are a few who inhabit the mailing
list if you have problems
