Can you describe a more complete scenario so that someone can try to
reproduce?

FWIW: the Ubuntu'ized version of OOo is: 1) out of date, 2) has
considerable problems with wizards and other issues, see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/

You can also check to see if OpenOffice.org's OOo has any problems
similar to yours, see:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/query.cgi
[not as nice as launchpad, but down towards the bottom you can enter
something in the Summary box and hit enter]

I'd personally recommend that you consider installing the official OOo
on your system. Here is a nice set of instructions:
http://www.8daysaweek.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=759
The only thing I'd change is:
sudo alien -d --scripts *.rpm
to
sudo alien -k -c *.rpm

-k will keep the dates:
-k, --keep-version
By default, alien adds one to the minor version number of each
package it converts. If this option is given, alien will not do
     this.

and -c does the same thing as --scripts. However note:
 -c, --scripts
Try to convert the scripts that are meant to be run when the pack‐
age is installed and removed. Use this with caution, becuase these
scripts might be designed to work on a system unlike your own, and
could cause problems. It is recommended that you examine the
scripts by hand and check to see what they do before using this
     option.
But I've not run into any problems with -c/--scripts yet on OOo.

-d is simply the default, so it's not necessary.
