I am trying to open a Writer document with Word,
and it doesn't seem to be compatible; it's come up with a page of
nonsense.
No, the document didn't start off as nonsense.
This is very inconvenient for me, as I am using a computer that does NOT
have Open Office.
I was using Open Office on the understanding that it was fully compatible
with Microsoft Office Suite.

Not happy;

Hello Sasha,

In what format did you save the document that now comes up as nonsense in
Word?
By default, OpenOffice.org saves in the internationally approved standard
ODF format (ods, odt...).
Microsoft cannot read this document standard.
So you have to save your work in OOo in a format that MS can read, i.e. its
own .doc, .xls etc.

Sa Save As > choose .doc (MS Word 97, 2000, XP) and don't forget to click on
the automatic filename extension.

As for full compatability, this is hard to achieve since MS formats are
secret and closed. OOo succeeds in 'imitating' them by 'backward
engeneering', a intelligent way of guessing.
