If you open a Word document with OpenOffice, it is automatically
converted to the OO format, and all you have to do is to save it in this
format. But verify if the file is still as you want it. With formulas,
macros etc., even tables, you will have somme additional work to do.

You can open them directly in OpenOffice.org by selecting File>Open
