OOo 2.2 latest version on Ubuntu Feisty amd64. I need to insert characters into a document, specifically Unicode (hex) E4, 251, E6, 25B, 1DD, 26A, F6, 254, FC, 3B2, 28C, D8, 283, and a few more. Normally I do this with Ctrl-Shift-u + hex and space bar. Most of the characters are appearing correctly, but several are not, e.g., FC (which is an umlauted u). What I get for hex FC is the cedilla on the bottom of a c-cedilla. If I use Insert > Special Character and display the font that I am using it also displays the cedilla for this character. However, Gnome Character Map correctly shows the u-umlaut, and the u-umlaut also appears correctly in all other applications, e.g., Abiword, Kword, and even my mail client. In other words, this version of OOo apparently has an incorrect lookup table. The version I am using is "2.2.0-1Ubuntu5 Wed Oct 3 23:57:03 UTC 2007."
This problem first surfaced about a week ago. I found that restarting the computer alleviated the problem for several hours. When the problem resurfaced I had to reboot again. However, now it seems to have become a permanent problem. It would be a great help if someone with the same version on Feisty amd64 would verify that they have the same issue. If so, I will file a bug report. If not, I will just quietly kill myself. OK, maybe not. But I'm pretty desperate because this professor insists on tidy work. I cannot easily move the document to Kword or Abiword because it requires features of OOo that those applications do not have. I really do not want to remove this version and install the version from OOo. The reason I do not want to do so is because I have done so at least four times in the past year (at the urging of people on this list) and each time I ended up with such a mess that it took many hours to clean up and at the end had to go back to the version in the Ubuntu repositories. I can't afford that luxury right now.
