The styles chapter in the Getting Started guide covers managing styles (creating, modifying, applying), not using them to accomplish tasks like having a different first page on a document.

A much better chapter to start with for this kind of question is Chapter 6, "Introduction to Styles" in the Writer Guide. Chapter 4, "Formatting Pages" and Chapter 7, "Working with Styles" are good follow-up chapters, depending on what someone wants to do.
