i tried this in OOo 1.1.2 with most of the
Autoformat options on but it didn't change the 0
to Ø or anything similar.

I think it may be something to do with the install / Mac version since
I cannot replicate on either 1.1.2 nor 1.9.62 (both on XP mind you)...

In general however it does sound like autocorrect/auto replace
functionality. Maybe a more indepth search may be required.
