When you use "Save as", there's a drop down list, where you can select
the appropriate format. You can also make it the default format, if you
wish.

When you first save an untitled document, the Save As window
opens. Change the File type to Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) from
the default Open
You should for sure explain in more detail the difficulties you
encounter. When I save a document in MS Word format, I simply select
File > Save as, and then in "Type", select one of the "MS Word" lines.
