You can get the information via snmp - here you can find some useful OIDs [1].
If I were you, I would have considered monitoring the VMs with zenoss [2]
(which uses snmp and already has all relevant OIDs).

Gilad, this is integral part of HA, For HA to work properly we rely on PM
mechanism, this feature makes sure PM is available, ie. running existing Check
PM periodically.
We need to look at integrating a monitoring tool and it's benefits separately.
