I could not get the calendars to update with new events even when setting the
Refresh View interval. From looking at the logs the frontend is working as well
as the backend database : it's making the events request to the db on every
interval.

You have to set "Refresh View" interval in your web "Preferences".
This will also refresh your calendar view.
Else they will be only loaded once after login.

I can succesfully import calendars from Nextcloud/Owncloud if I use the
"Download" link provided in these apps.
Auth is then working and the events are displayed correctly.
I could not find a way to get these web calendars sources to be updated though,
