408 Error - Workaround

I had been experiencing a 408 error in my apache logs when I was using the Apache Web Server (HTTPD) as a proxy in front of Tomcat 5.0.28, Tomcat 5.0.30 and Tomcat 5.5.9. As it turns out I believe there is a problem with Tomcat and how it sets fhe path for cookies, specifically the

408 error with Form Authentication and Proxy. Doesn't occur with Basic Auth.

I've seen several posts that describe a 408 error in tomcat. I'm using Apache 2.0.55 as a proxy to Tomcat 5.0.30. Using Form based authentication, I access a secured URL and I'm challenged with a login form. I submit a valid userid/password and receive the following error. HTTP Status 408 -
