org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.SQLNestedException : Cannot get a connection, pool error Timeout waiting for idle object

I get the captioned exception when I try to connect to a mysql DB.

Tomcat 6.0.14
JDK 1.6_2
WinXP

what causes the error to occur? The same application works in tomcat 5.5
