Hi David, Thanks for that and sorry for my ignorance of Apache Tomcat but I have just moved from an old IIS server that didn't care about the file permissions. I am using ftp from Windows (using Dreamweaver) to a Unix box so windows doesn't know about setting file permissions in this instance
