If your items do not implements #equals() and #hashcode(), the index will be -1 (see ListMultipleChoice#getModelValue()). Note that IChoiceRenderer has a note about this in the javadoc. Since you are using this index, the currently selected items are not identified - i.e. no item has an index==-1.
