A US university student recently sought opinion regarding the
implementation of the metric system in Canadian schools.
What follows is my response to the student. At the urging of Joe Reid,
respected Past President of the Canadian Metric Association,
I am copying my response

we officially make the final transition.

As I've said before, the 'elderly' are often used by opponents of
metrication as convenient excuses for their views. Another example of
how this is an abuse was shown to me yesterday, when my partner
reported passing two old ladies in the street, with one saying to the
other "I would say it was ab
Last night (Tuesday) there was supposed to have been a meeting in
Sunderland to show support for the 'Metric Martyrs'. As yet, I have
been unable to find a single mention of it in the media, even those we
might expect to make a big deal of it. I can't even find any reference
on the Sunderland Echo

What is their "natural unit" cm? I suppose you could argue that AU is a
"natural" unit (the mean Earth-Sun distance), but parsec (pc) is certainly
not natural, unless you consider the Babylonian arcsecond a natural unit!
It would seem that whatever editor wrote the manuscript guidelines has never

Amtrak offers checked baggage service at many stations and on many
trains and Amtrak Thruway buses throughout the country. Each ticketed
passenger may check three pieces, not to exceed 50 pounds (23 kg) per

This undoubtedly arises because our armed ground forces have worked in
terms of meters and kilometers for the last 30 years or so as a result
of NATO influences.

I was speaking to a Texas State Trooper at a meeting last night and he was
discussing weapons tactics etc. He consistently used metres when discussing
distances. A glimmer of hope in Texas.

To all,
A few days ago I read on a Dutch anti-smoking site that the Camel Trophy has
been or will take place for the last time this year. This is good for two
reasons: it was propaganda for smoking and it was also propaganda for the
world wide use of ifp. In all its publicity, in any languge

However, Alex Chadwick saw fit to use the antiquated unit "miles" in all of
