In the first listing of metric units in the U.S., the hectare, are, and
centare (no "i") were listed with their equivalents in acres, square
yards, and square inches, respectively. That was in the Metric Act of
1866 act. See the section "Measures of Surface" at

One property seems to be made up of numerous small pieces of land, the sheet
has the area of each piece listed in 3 columns, ha, a and ca. One piece will be

Do you mean it is "mixed base?" The ares are only the residue from an integer
number of hectares? And the centiares (which are square meters, if that's what
they are) are residue from integer ares? (I've never seen anyone use centiares,
so I don't know whether you keep or drop the "i", centares?

As John said below, all the courses in Canada he's played on (primarily Ontario
and BC), are only in yards.
All the courses he played on in Oz and NZ are only in metres.
The one course I mentioned near where I live in the UK, dual marked, was built
only 9 years ag
