Glad it went well.  In your blog, you asked three questions.  You'll have to do 
your own research, but my thoughts on the three:
*"The military" is too broad.  I think you'll find the Army is very metric, in 
particular using UTM maps with coordinates in meters.  I think you will find 
the Navy and Air Force much more traditional, nautical miles and knots.

*Mile markers: If the road goes metric, they should change to kilometer 
markers.  I would give priority to exit numbers and distance to destination 
signs first.  The mile marker sticks wouldn't necessarily need to change on 
"day 1" but should be changed.

Recipes: My recommendation for converting. First measure volumetrically, then 
weigh each ingredient as you go.  Once you have all the weights, try to 
rationalize the recipe but slightly increasing or decreasing size of recipes to 
make most of the weights close to round numbers.
