I think we are into angels-on-pin territory here.  The Mg has to be at least
as valid as the familiar mg, submultiple of multiple notwithstanding.  Are
you suggesting that use of the milligram be depracated ?

It may technically be a double multiple, but it doesn't have a double prefix.

Look at it slightly differently, the base unit may be the kg, but the base
unit *scale* is the g, so any prefix of g is correct.

There is probably a different perspective here in Europe, where the metric
system is widely used by the public, rather than only by scientists.  Outside
of physics, it doesn't really matter that the kg has been adopted as the base
unit rather than the g, and units like the hectare and liter are every bit
as valid to use as the meter and gram.
