I think we are into angels-on-pin territory here. The Mg has to be at least as valid as the familiar mg, submultiple of multiple notwithstanding. It may technically be a double multiple, but it doesn't have a double prefix. Look at it slightly differently, the base unit may be the kg, but the base unit *scale* is the g, so any prefix of g is correct. There is probably a different perspective here in Europe, where the metric system is widely used by the public, rather than only by scientists.
