Ferdinand Porche took an interesting approach to this when he designed the ­
all metric ­ Volkswagen in 1931.*

Porche used only three bolt sizes in the whole car: a small bolt for the
body panels, a slightly larger one for engine parts and a very large one for
the wheels. By doing this, he was able to provide each car with a three
spanner toolkit.

*   OK, I know the purists will say that the Porche wasn't officially called
a Volkswagen until its release in 1936, but the 1931 model still looks the
same to me as the volkswagen known here as the 'pregnant pastie'.
