Are you 100% sure of this ?  Is it not the case that a price per yard
would be perfectly legal if displayed as a "supplemental indicator" ?

My understanding of the law in the UK (and I am open to correction) is
that what is illegal is not the provision of imperial but the non-provision
of metric in price signs.

It is important to get this right, because the BWMA are always peddling
the lie that the so-called Metric Martyrs were convicted for displaying
prices per pound rather than failing to provide weighing machines capable
of metric *or dual* operation.
