The death has taken place of Seamus Brennan, former Minister of Transport for Ireland at the age of 60.

A popular politician, who enjoyed a reputation as an innovative and effective minister, it was he who signed the order that finally implemented the metric changeover on Ireland's speed signs, after many years protracted delays by his predecessors.
