I think showing the weight of eggs is a good idea - in addition to the other information already currently shown (number). But forcing eggs to be sold in specific quantities seems to fly in the face of the previous legislation that came into force this year that allows a free-for-all in package sizing. So on that basis eggs should be sold in any quantity you like - boxes of 7, if you feel that is a good marketing ploy, as long as the box shows it's 7, and the weight in grams is also shown.
Personally, I do think that some rational sizing of packages is preferable, especially if (as some rogue traders like to do) no unit pricing is shown, so comparing value between one package and another is then difficult. Uniform package sizing makes price comparisons easier. But as long as price comparisons are possible, then to me it's not a big issue what the package size is (eggs or anything else) as long as I can get a package is roughly the size I want and I can compare value with other similar products that may be sold in different size packaging.
