The official name is International System of Units or SI units for short.  Let 
us NOT make up confusing alternate names.  Ask them if they use SI units.  If 
they give you a blank look, they don't know what they are and don't use them, 
or 
(probably) don't use them properly.  If necessary, you could clarify that is 
the 
proper name for the "modern metric system" as opposed to the obsolete metric 
system with cgs units, steres, kilogram-force, myriameters and the like.

Oh, this discussion got me to thinking the next industry expo that we have 
here, 
that I should attend, even though I am no longer working as a toolmaker, and 
ask 
every vendor, if they are working in and or only Metric, and if not, why. Thats 
Metric with a capital M, we do not want to confuse with metric, the math 
definition..... ; )
