NYSDOT never touched the idea of converting signs, only design of projects.

Not so much from the 1970’s as from the late 1990’s - mid 2000’s. I remember 
seeing new dual-unit marked signs being installed until the mid-2000’s, as 
CalTrans and NYDOT were still metricating.

I am going north on US 395 about 20 km north of Victorville.  I saw a sign 
perhaps about 500 meters to 1 km north of Shadow Mountain Road.  I didn't have 
time to get out my camera as I went by, so this was from Google Street View.
