You should use bridged networking. In VM settings go to network settings
page, select "Attached To:" "Bridged Network" (for 2.2) and select the
host interface you want to bridge to.
This will make you VM be in the same network as your host and be
accessible like other hosts in your network.

VirtualBox and Ubuntu newbie in trouble.
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 desktop (Deputy Dawg, Loungesuit Larry,
whatever) on Windows XP SP3 and it ran fine. Now that I have installed
the Linux Guest Additions, after logon the screen goes blank white. I
