the problem is that chkuser is not writing log files,
so diagnosis is hindered.

The good news is that chkuser is working as expected now.
The bad news is that I didn't change anything to make it so.
Presumably, my initial test must have been flawed, because
it appears chkuser has been running fine for the past 10+
hours

server. current vpopmail server version is 5.3.6 and vpopmail version in
the new server is 5.4.13

before you copy the domains directory into the new server, i think you should
create the domains & users by using the proper way first. Then you only copy
the domains directory to replace the existing one.
