I just explicitly tested this and after a restart VDR did use
the selected font.
So I'm afraid I can't reproduce what you are experiencing.
I experienced the same bug!
It seems related to the loaded plugins.
Disabling these 3 Plugins for me cured the problem:
cpumon
pilotskin
skinelchi

when I try to start femon with xineliboutput nothing apears. It seems to
to start but nothing is shown on screen (using vdr-sxfe or xine
directly). Starting femon on console works when vdr is not running. All
other plugins seem to work. Experimenting with OSD settings in

I have discovered that the sysinfo plugin written by Kikko forces
VDR-1.5.x to use the default font rather then the user-defined
setting. I emailed the author and he responded by saying he won't fix
his plugin until Klaus releases a final version of 1.5, which could be
