NBU can use VCB (Vmware Consolidated Backup) to do backups of VM's. This does
allow a VM to be running whilst in the process of being backed up.

Hello Rodrigo,
SAN Client installation just needs a regular NetBackup install. No
special installation is required for the core NetBackup Fibre Transport
components. The components are installed when you install NetBackup
Media Servers and Clients. The feature needs a SAN Client license on the
Just curious about this backup - does it allow you to backup a vm while it is
running?
I am new to this so, please go easy on me.
Thanks for understanding...

San Client manual:

The requirements are VERY specific. I'm wondering if anybody out there has
managed to configure it successfully? From the responses so far, seems not

Hi ,
I'm hoping someone can verify a license question. We're setting up an
environment with Vmware - several esx machines , 2 w2k media/vcb servers
and a windows master cluster ( 6.5.3) Symantec have said we need an
enterprise license per esx machine, and I'm just wondering why! If it's

Ok lets verify.

this is NOT a catalog backup that you are looking for but a normal
server or database backup)

Do you mean you would like to turn a "Client" into a "SAN Media Server"?
Or are you wanting this SAN Client access to the same robot and drives as your
master? In which case, you would need something called a "Shared Storage
Option" License key.

Perhaps you are referring to the SSO license? What are you trying to do?

I've not done it on SuSE at all. If it is a 2.6 kernel probably you
could make the RedHat Linux 2.6 client work.
Since I don't really know SuSE I can't be sure.
A couple of things I have seen on RHEL4/5 clients:
1) You have to be sure xinetd was installed BEFORE Netbackup. Otherwise

Make sure the policy type matches the policy of the client you are
restoring from.

Its usually just a problem with the libraries and getting them to work,
unless this thread was the one about the special glibc issue.. What have
you tried/done, summarize it?

Check the event logs.
Make sure you have disk space available where NetBackup resides and also
where the Catalog is placed.
What happens with the manual kick off of a Backup job?
Reboot the Server?
Thanks, Simon
