I am not sure if this applies in your case, but Netbackup will freeze
tapes automatically after three tape related errors during backup.
Have you noticed any 84 or 86 failures?

also check any logs or Syslog messages from your OS (sorry I do not know
much about Unix, but something may well be reported in the logs).
