VSS is better than VSP for Windows 2003 and beyond.
It is still at the mercy of the Microsoft open file BEDS type software.
From the command prompt, on the client, run this command:
vssadmin list writers.
The Writers should return as Stable and should NOT have Waiting for
Completion

First, don't bother using VSP. It has known issues and eventually goes away in
version 7.x.

I would agree! VSP is dire!! Ignore it. I can say that in all my 11+
years in NBU, I turned it off !
I have to throw the BS flag here. That's just FUD.
Until Microsoft finally came up with VSS in w2k3, the OS vendor
provided *zero* tools for open file backups. Veritas had been filling
