Check the /etc/hosts file, I had a similar problem and found it must have a
loopback address defined -
127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
Simple, but easily missed.

Thanks David. I ended up taking it back to 6.0 then up to 6.5.5 and restored
the catalog without any issues.
