Sounds like multiple issues.
The disk group config mix up sounds like it may be a corrupt
/etc/vx/disk.info file. If so, here is how I've fixed this in the past:
-Remove disk.info file then:
#vxconfigd -k -m disable
#vxdctl init
#vxdctl initdmp
#vxdctl enable
OR
#vxdctl stop
#vxconfigd -m en

except the raw device view which might be useful in handful of cases.
Hence I guess checkpoint makes snapshot redundant.
Could you please provide some leads to find the use cases where one is
choosen over another
