I had the same problem initially when i wanted to try Versions out.
My Mac (latest 10.5.8) has SVN version 1.5.2:
macos$> svn --version
svn, version 1.5.2 (r32768)
   compiled Sep 19 2008, 14:38:15

I had the same problem as you out of the box. I fixed it by going to
Preferences, and choosing "SVN version 1.5.7" in Versions - which
worked for me.
