When you hook the camera to the computer, it sees the camera as a USB storage device. It shouldn’t actually connect to the computer until you tell it to. Some cameras have a specific switch, most will switch when you turn the camera to view pictures. Using some picture capture software will allow

As far as I see Nick is using a canon camera. I used one years ago. Canon is delivering some software with the camera which allows a remote control of the device. That means you can control the camera, change setup. At least with my camera, with the software you had more options as with the camera
