As a general rule, attach the reel to the rod and balance the rod on your index finger placed under the cork and see if the rod remains level. If it dips at the rod tip the reel is to light, if it dips at the reel the reel is too heavy. Of course this is an approximation depending upon where you pl

Reels when still in the box will be marked for line weight on the box. Maybe some of the high end reels might have it marked on the reel. Don't know that, I don't have any high end reels. The size of the reel is usually matched to the line weight of the rod. Putting a reel for an 8 wt line on a 4
