Hi Maureen-
PN1995.9 is what we use. Here's a link may work. Should be persistent.

Maureen,
I couldn't speak to the position that it takes longer to do it your current way
(PN1995.9, and then by genre), but I will say that our feature films are
cataloged primarily as PN1997, then arranged essentially in alpha order by
title (title of *origin,* of course, so that The Bicycle
A few years ago during our move to open collection, we recataloged fully
LOC, and have recently added the newer films genre metadata to the records.

Ours are cataloged using LOC and then by title, but we get complaints that they
are not set up by genre.
PN 1992.77 - TV series
PN1997 - older classic movies
PN 1997.2 - new movies
PN 1997.5 - animated

To all who are using LC in some way, is it your catalogers who are assigning
call numbers or are you using copy records that already have them?

Hi,
I know that some academic libraries have subscribed to Netflix DVD service (not
without controversy!), but I wonder if any libraries are using streaming
services to augment their collections accessing via institutional subscriptions.
Thanks for sharing experiences. We are a small library in
We use LCC for all our media. It's not perfect, but this arrangement seems to
facilitate browsing.
Recreational films go in PN1995.9, arranged by genre, then title

C55 - Comedy
D4 - Detective/Mystery

We use copy cataloguing whenever it's available so not as consistent as
some of the classification schemes mentioned so far.

Wow Peter. I am shocked it is not out on DVD in Germany. The Kino VHS was
done at a time before
GATT so the film had no valid US copyright.

We use the 1995.9 also and it does present a problem in that so many
titles have very similar call numbers, making shelving a challenge.
However, they are grouped somewhat sensibly. Musicals are together,
foreign films, comedies. What other PN number would they use?

PN1997 and PN1997.2,
Maureen! Alas, here at USC we use just a very simple sequential
numbering system for our dvds. The last
dvd added to our collection has been assigned the call number LVYDVD
4779, the next one added will
be LVYDVD 4780, and so on and so forth. All rather mindless and
annoying. :o
Cheers,
We have a slightly different approach. Ages ago we moved from Dewey to LC
classification for all our media. When it came to the feature films, the
cataloger met with me to determine what might be the best, given our collection
is in open stacks and heavily browsed. We ended up using PN1993.5
Our feature films are classed using LC's literature schedule, using
country-of-origin-of-director as the author.
For the most part results in organization by language. (A few oddities:
Brokeback Mountain is in with the Asian films because directed by Ang Lee).
Directors are alphabetized within
Our central IT folks have something like that called digital media lab. Here
is a list of services/etc.:

It is only for people who are actively teaching--which at our institution could
be a lot of people (but sadly, not me).
