Hi there,
I'm new to the group, and in need of some advice. I dusted off my mac plus last
night and switched it on. Initially the screen came on and it started its
diagnostic routine , then the screen blacked out. When I restarted it the
screen would no longer come on and it makes a strange star
Visually inspect all capacitors for starters. Marred, charred, corrosion,
explosions. Possibly a bad solder joint, crack. My first guess would be the
analog board.

With it on you can give it a hard wrap on the side of left side of the case,
if there is a loose solder joint in the A/B, the the video might come right
back.

I've done the tap trick before - in a darkened room to see where the sparks
jump on a dry joint and soldered it up. The video has been a bit iffy the last
few times I've fired it up - I've had to give it a tap. I've inspected both
boards and can find no evidence of bad joints or exploding compon
. you cant always see a bad solder connections. but I once repaired a power
supply by touching most every joint on the bottom of the board.

When did the signatures in the case stop? My memory wants to say that it
was the SE that was the first without signatures in the case, but . . .

I forget whether it was the IIci or IIcx, but when I pulled it apart, I was
surprised to notice signatures on the case... Going by
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Macintosh_models those models were
introduced after the SE.

My Mac Plus, in 1999, was my dial-up email machine using Eudora 3.x with a
modified system floppy for connectivity and the email program in an external
floppy drive. I re-soldered every joint on the power board just to be certain
my Plus kept going.

What I remember was that the mold broke somewhere during SE production and the
new molds didn't have the signatures. So there are a number of SE's that have
signatures, but later model SE's did not.

Not all SEs have the signatures. The latest models were produced without them
in the mold. As I recall, the last models to have them are the early run SE
FDHDs (later models reading SuperDrive don't seem to have them).
All Pluses have signatures, as do all earlier Macs. I believe the IIcx and II

Could I tell if any of the caps are bad from a visual inspection or do I need
to get a tester?
