I've tried using the CopyRoms utility that comes with vMac, but when I
extracted the ROM from the prototype, it lists it as "Mac128k.ROM", and the
resulting file is exactly the same as a conventional 128k ROM file.

I don't think it comes on the Mac version. It's called GetRom. The Linux
version I've never used. I don't use the Mac version much because both
Basilisk II and SheepShaver will run terribly on PPC machine

Don't bother. The drive will have to be replaced.
I know because I did the same exact thing you did. Drive was working, I
wiped the heads so lightly it wouldn't hurt the most delicate flower.
Stopped working promptly afterwards. The same amount of pressure you need

Did you disassemble the drive?
In my case it already wasn't working, so I don't know if it was wrecked by
the disk before trying to clean it. Maybe excessive friction ruined the
alignment?
Is there any way to fix it? I don't want to junk it =(

anyone? i'm looking for a laptop that runs system 9 and is in mint
condition. i bought a G3 from ebay and the video has rolling horizontal
lines thru it. any stores sell this kind of thing with a warranty? or is it
just an ebay kinda thing at this point.

concerning powerbook G3 with distorted video - try pressing GENTLY !
from the front and the back of the display. I had one with completely
distorted video - now it works perfect.
If the reason for your failure is the video processor this will not work
