72 pin RAM

Thanks for everyone's help so far. Another novice question. For those Macs that use 72 pin RAM, is it interchangable? Meaning will it work or damage the mac if it is a certain speed, (xx ns)? Or are there specific ones to avoid? There is someone locally who says he has ,...two 16 MB

LCII to LC 475 but small sound
