battery. Its tough to get to on a CX.

Have you tried Techtool from Micromat, the same folks who made MacEKG.
Snooper is no longer sold, but parts seem to have been incorporated
into the latest version of Norton Utilities, 3.2.1 came from this page

Well, I wanted to let everyone know that I tried thee IIcx's twin brother
out (same hard drive, memory, etc.) and it worked fine. It must have been
the clock chip on that motherboard. Now I don't know what to do with the
first one.
