How can I rename it without formatting the drive?
You can't rename it as long as file sharing is on. Turn it off, and rename it.

You have to turn off file sharing in order to rename the drive. Then
you can turn it back on again. (You can also boot with the shift key
down to disable all extensions and rename it, then reboot, that ought
to work).
