A 2-finger double tap should do it, but if you don't get a notification it is probably because of how they are set in Settings > Notifications. Also, make sure you look at the top left and just a bit down, banners usually show up there right underneath where your carrier and signal strength are

I don’t’ think the Trekz Air are that old. I got my Trekz Air around January of last year and at that time, I think they were still relatively new. Maybe two or three months. If you had the wide plasticky band ones, those were the bluez II. They sucked. The ones after were the Trekz Titanium.
