I would try clearing messages from the app switcher and also shutting down and
restarting your phone you can also turn off the group messages feature you just
go into settings then messages and then scroll down till you find the option to
have messages from one sender in a group or not and tell
Perfectly correct, but that would not be apparent from the status bar. So you
would have to suspect a problem with your setup to go into Settings.

What you do is double tap on the unread message, then you can swipe right to
move through the messages until you get to the last one. Another thing you can
do is start from the bottom of the screen where it says “Text field edit”, then
swipe left to hear the rest of the messages.
