When I am in the messages area of my iPhone there is a "contact" button in
the upper right area of the phone just below the status area. What is this
button for?

If you get a gruop message, then the contact button will allow you to
see the people and a more info button for each person to view their
contact information. I don't know if the button appears if you get a
message from a single person but probably so. I find this helpful when
I get group messages
